TRAINING BAND SERIES.

Almost every Brass band in the country runs a training band of young players who may not be of sufficient technical ability to play in the main band. These young players are usually rehearsed separately from the main band. However, several problems are immediately apparent.

 1.                   The instrumentation available in these training bands is almost never a full complement of a standard band, and constantly changes as players are promoted to the main band.

 2.                   The ability of these young players is very varied, from rank beginners to players who are almost ready to join the main band.

This means that the standard repertoire of a Brass band is not always suitable for these players. Constant adjustments have to be made. There is, therefore, a need for music specially written for these bands. These training band kits are a possible answer in several respects.

1.             All the scores are written to be playable by any size of band from the basic trio of 2 Cornets and a Bass instrument, i.e Euph, Baritone, Trombone or Tuba, up to a full band instrumentation.

2.            The keys chosen for the pieces are kept to a maximum of 3 sharps or flats. The range of the parts is carefully thought out, so that the upper limit for the 1^st Cornet, 1st Horn, Baritone, 1^st Trombone and Euphonium is G at the top of the Treble stave. All the other parts are below this.

3.            The music chosen is such that challenges are made to the players without ever leaving them floundering which is what usually happens if they have to use the standard band library.

 The parts available will be:

In addition there are optional accompaniment parts for Horns, Baritones and Trombones. These can be used where there are sufficient instruments to cover the basic 4 parts.

The distribution of parts would be in the hands of the Training Band’s Conductor and would depend, to a large degree, on the ability of the available players.
